Influenced by designs that have been around for at least 10,000 years in North America, Luna's DIY Kit encourages the proud human tradition of making your own footwear.

Making sandals from a Luna Do-it-Yourself Kit is fun and relatively easy. Some tools are required, though the options for cutting and preparing these sandals are endless.

You can find links to a list of recommended tools and how-to instructions above.

The kit includes a sheet of soling material, laces, and an optional leather footbed with glue.

Lace Options:

• The leather laces are high quality wax impregnated latigo leather. They are strong and comfortable.

• The hemp laces are a soft braided hemp that actually get a little tighter when they get wet, which can be helpful in soggy conditions.

• The 10mm wide Leadville leather laces feel more secure and are stronger than the other laces.

• All our traditional laces are 72 inches long (includes extra length for reties).

• Elasticized laces in kits with 11x12 soling sheets come with 40 inches of lace (includes extra length for reties).

• Elasticized laces in kits with 9x11 soling sheets come with 38 inches of lace (includes extra length for reties).

Soling Material Options:

• 6mm Neoprene- Light weight, Molds well to your feet, comfortable, works best for paved surfaces and light trails, minimal tread.

• 4mm Cherry- Thinnest option, great ground feel, firm feel, good traction, doesn't mold to your feet, can be floppy.

• 6mm Cherry- Firm feel, good rock protection, doesn't mold to your feet much, long lasting and durable.

• 6mm Trail Nubby- Primarily for trails, Great traction, good rock protection, molds to you feet, the nubs wear out quicker on paved surfaces.

• 4mm Rawhide Leather- Thinnest option, good ground feel, all leather (no rubber), molds well to your feet, light weight, no tread or traction, wears out quicker than rubber.

• 8mm Leadville Pacer- Great for trails, light weight, good tread and traction, good rock protection, molds to your feet well, less ground feel on paved surfaces.

• 10mm Leadville- Great for trails, best rock protection, molds to your feet well, good tread and traction, least ground feel on paved surfaces.

Footbed Options:

• Leather Footbed (brown or black)- Very comfortable, helps sandal mold to your feet, some moisture absorption, can become slippery when completely soaked.

• Naked Top (No leather)- Better in really wet conditions, lighter weight.

Orders are generally completed and ready to ship within 2-5 business days from receipt of order and footprints, if custom.

If both your feet fit on a standard sheet of paper(8.5" x 11") then order the standard size(9" x 11"). If your feet are larger than that order the 11" x 12" size. If your feet are longer than 12" then send us an email and we will send you the size you need.

Question:

What does naked top mean? or no footbed?

Answer:

The footbed is a piece of suede to be glued to the top of the soling material. It's adds a little comfort to the sandal. "Naked top" just means that the suede square will not be included with the order, so the finished sandal will have a naked top. Any of the soling materials work just fine without the footbed, even better in some scenarios (like very wet conditions).

Question:

would these be good for everyday wear?

Answer:

Yeah, they are great for everyday wear. The suede leather footbed adds a nice comfortable feel to them for casual use.

Question:

I recently made a pair from the 4 mm cherry kit and love them for walking around but the sole feels flimsy compared to the sandals shown in the videos on this site. Are they supposed to be that way?

Answer:

The thin 4 mm Cherry material is a very dense material that will last a longer time, and give a better feel for the ground, however, it will not hold the shape of your foot. Because it is so dense it will not form to you foot or compress the way the Original neoprene does.

Question:

How well does the 6mm Recyclado compare to the other soles?

Answer:

It is made out of 100% recycled California tires and does great as a casual sandal. However, the recycled rubber is heavier, less durable, has less traction, and doesn't mold as well to your foot as the neoprene.

You will need a leather footbed (or your own strong material if you choose not to use leather) to help with the durability of the side holes and prevent them from tearing. We are currently working on getting better recycled materials.

Question:

Glue comes with this right?

Answer:

If you order a suede footbed, yes it will come with the glue.

Question:

Thickness of the soles of your sandals are 4 mm, 6 mm, and 10 mm. What is the thickness of the soles on the finished kit sandals?

Answer:

The kits come in various sizes which are listed in the drop down menu. The nubby material is approximately 7 mm. If you add a leather/suede footbed the finished huarache will be less than 1 mm thicker.

The custom made and standard sized huaraches are:
10 mm for the Leadville Naked Top (no leather footbed),
6 mm for the Original Naked Top as well as 6 mm for the Recyclado,
and approximately 4 mm for the Equus.

Question:

Can I get this in England?

Answer:

We do ship internationally, however it can take up to 2-3 weeks to get through customs.

We do not have any retail locations out side of Washington state at the moment.

Question:

1. I am interested in DIY kit with Elasticized Laces. What do you recommend for making the long slots for side holes with these laces?

2. Do the 6mm Cherry or 7mm Nubby compress and fit to your foot like the original neoprene?

Answer:

1. For making the slot holes we use a 5/8" wide oblong punch but you can also use a 1/4" round hole punch or 1/4" drill bit and do two holes an 1/8" apart then cut out the piece between the two holes with a razor blade.

2. The 6mm Cherry does not compress at all. It will eventually get a patina from your foot and the edges may start to slightly lift around your foot but in general it doesn't mold to your foot.
The 7mm Nubby is a Neoprene type material. It is denser than the Original Luna but a lot less dense than the Cherry. It will mold to your foot nicely but not as much as the Original Luna material.

Question:

If I were running in the rain/mud or in sunny weather, (on both rocky-ish trails and asphalt) what would be the best foot bed or soiling material?

Answer:

The Nubby or Leadville (option coming soon) sole with a Naked Top (no leather footbed) would be the best option for rocky trails with rain and mud. The Nubby material is not ideal for paved surfaces because the little nubs wear out quicker on pavement.
The 6mm Cherry with a Naked Top is a good option for paved surfaces and trails. It dosen't have nearly as much traction on trails as the Nubby or Leadville but will last a lot longer on paved surfaces.

Question:

What size should the toe hole be if using the 1/2 inch elasticized leather laces and what do you use to glue the fold together where the lace is between your toes. Thanks, Dan

Answer:

For the toe hole we use a 3/16" inch hole punch. A 1/4" hole punch or drill bit will work also.
Superglue works great for glueing the lace together in between the toes. Put a thin bead of super glue about an inch or so long, fold the lace in half, and pinch it together until it dries.

Question:

Are you going to be offering the Leadville sole anytime soon?

Answer:

At the moment the Leadville sole is not available as a sole sheet or kit. We hope to offer it soon.

Question:

I bought DIY Kit corresponding roughly to The Leadville. After struggling for 4 days I can now enjoy running on them. Location of hole between the toes is quite critical.
I also used 60 grit sandpaper to bevel and thin out the 1.5 inches of lace coming out of the sole. It now conforms to the hole naturally and I can not feel it anymore. Now it is wonderful to run on these "Huaraches".

Question:

I just read Born To Run and want to make two pairs of sandals, one pair for me and one for my wife. Is one kit enough or do I need two?

Answer:

We're glad you found inspiration to make you and your wife sandals! Unless your feet are unusually small, you will need to purchase two kits to make sandals for two adults.

We use the following perimeters for determining which kit size to purchase:

If both your feet fit on a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper, then order the standard 9" x 11" size kit. If both of your feet don't fit on a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper, then order the 11" x 12" size kit. If your feet are longer than 12", send us an email and we will send you the size you need.

Question:

I'm not sure which soling material I should get. I'm leaning towards the 4mm Cherry because I like the thinness and overall durability. However they don't mold to the feet like the Neoprene. Are the any advantages to having the sandals mold to the feet? Does it make a difference that the Cherry doesn't change form?

Answer:

We tend to like the 6mm Neoprene over the 4mm Cherry. The Neoprene will mold to the foot with use in the the sense that where the foot compresses the soling material, it will become slightly thinner and the entire sole will begin to take the overall shape of the foot. This helps with keeping the sandal conformed, giving it a "custom" fit and makes it a more comfortable sandal to wear.
