This rugged sandal is designed for hardcore trails. Tested by Barefoot Ted in the 2010 Leadville Trail 100, where they performed beautifully.
These sandals take the edge off all those sharp rocks that otherwise can bruise and tenderize the bottom of your feet. The sole of this sandal is a 10mm Vibram neoprene rubber that is light weight, durable, and has an aggressive tread pattern. Each pair of sandals are cut and assembled by hand for each order.
You can choose your laces. The most secure and comfortable option is the new ATS laces. The ATS laces feature the ribbon/plug system between the toes, soft comfortable webbing for a very secure fit, and elasticized leather around the back of the heel for easy slip-on and off. For another easy and comfortable option go with the Equus elasticized laces. If you like the security and style of traditional laces we recommend the Leadville laces which are high quality 10mm wide, wax impregnated latigo leather. These laces feel more secure and are stronger than our other traditional laces.
**Note: The ATS laces are not interchangeable with other laces at this time.**
You can also get the Leadville with a copper brown suede footbed on top that adds some comfort though we recommend the naked top because it performs better in the wet and muddy conditions that you are bound to encounter on the trails.
THE ELASTICIZED LACE ATTACHMENT SYSTEM:
All traditional laces will still be tied with the traditional knot, but with this countersunk method the knot will sit deeper in the sandal making it less prone to abrasion and longer lasting. The traditional laces also now include a washer between the knot and sandal to prevent the knot from pulling through the toe hole. All future orders of extra traditional laces will now come with a black washer to install with the lace.
Be sure to check the instruction pages for tying methods and tips.

Measure your foot:
1. Stand with your heels against a flat vertical wall. Your heels should be just touching the wall, not pressing into it.
2. Slide a ruler under each foot and take the measurement in centimeters from the wall to the tip of your longest toe.
3. Take the longer of the two foot measurements.
***The chart below lists the actual length and width of our sandal sizes. For wiggle room, take the measurement of your foot and add 1/2 cm or more. Find the size below that best fits the length.
For example, our Head Craft Monkey's feet measure exactly 29 cm. He added 1/2 cm and chose a size 11.5 which is 29.51 cm long. The size 11.5 fits him perfectly!
You can also measure the widest part of your forefoot to make sure it is not considerably wider or narrower than the sandal.
For example, our Head Craft Monkey's feet measure about 11.5 cm wide at the forefoot. The size 11.5, at 11.85 cm wide is the perfect width for him.

Question:
What's the benefit of having the leather footbed on the Leadville?
Answer:
The leather adds a little bit of comfort and some moisture absorption but I don't recommend the leather footbed for the leadville because in wet conditions the leather can be slippery. But if you live in a very dry climate the leather can be comfortable.
Question:
Does mud get stuck in tread of these sandals? I imagine it not shaking out easily and weighting down the sandals. Has anyone had this experience?
Answer:
The sandal itself doesn't have a problem with collecting too much mud. If the mud is drying and REALLY sticky it will clump to the bottom of the sandal, just like any running shoe. This only becomes a problem when wearing the elasticized laces because they will stretch due to the extra weight. It can be annoying but simply scraping the bottom of the sandal on a rock or with a stick will remedy that problem. I encountered this while running the Goblin Valley 50k in southern Utah where the 'mud' is more like clay.
Also, running through mud in sandals often provides an awesome opportunity to run BAREFOOT, which is more fun and feels great on the feet (if you're confident in your barefoot running skills). But, if you are running through this type of mud I would recommend getting the 3/8 inch Leadville Laces for a more secure feeling.
Question:
How often do the laces need to be replaced? Are they available to purchase separately?
Answer:
Yes, all laces are available separately. The life of laces depend on terrain and form amongst other factors. Each knot usually last 100 miles, though the first knot tends to go much quicker since your sandal is still forming to your foot. You should receive long enough lace to last a few "spare tire changes"
Question:
how much do the leadvile sandals weight?
Answer:
We know we need to get sandal weights posted so thank you for asking! We have a men's size 9 Naked Top Leadville w/ 1/2" Equus Elasticized Leather weighing 4.5 oz each, and with Leather Footbed weighing 5.5 oz each.
