The Original Luna, handmade in Seattle, represents the best fruits of our experiences and experiments with old-school footwear and gleanings from insights that we have gathered from both our ancestors and our customers.
****UPDATE****
All sandal models with elasticized laces will come with the new elasticized lace attachment system. The new Elasticized Lace attachment system eliminates the wear on the lace at the toe hole, makes our sandals completely flat underfoot, is still interchangeable with traditional laces, looks much cleaner, and uses a strong flexible ribbon between the toes that is the most comfortable solution yet! This system uses a plug that is countersunk, making it completely level with the bottom of the sandal. The ribbon between the toes allows for even the narrowest toe gaps to be comfortable, eliminating the need to use a narrower lace.
All traditional laces will still be tied with the traditional knot, but with this countersunk method the knot will sit deeper in the sandal making it less prone to abrasion and longer lasting. The traditional laces also now include a washer between the knot and sandal to prevent the knot from pulling through the toe hole. All future orders of extra traditional laces will now come with a black washer to install with the lace.

The Original Luna uses a 6mm Vibram neoprene sole that is lightweight, comfortable, and has excellent ground feel. This sandal is great for running or walking on paved surfaces and moderate trails.
You can choose between a copper brown suede leather footbed and a naked top (no leather glued to the top). The leather footbed adds comfort, helps it form to your foot, absorbs some moisture, and adds strength to the side holes. The naked top is lighter and it may be better when it is really wet.
You also have a choice between several styles of laces. The Equus elasticized laces are the most comfortable and easiest to use and wear (highly recommended). They require very little adjusting and we tie them up completely before we send them.
The traditional leather laces are a high quality wax impregnated latigo lace. These laces are strong and comfortable. You also can choose braided hemp laces that are soft, comfortable and may perform better than the leather when it is really wet.
The Leadville laces are 10mm wide(other leather laces are 6mm) and add security and strength though they may not be as comfortable for those that are new to wearing huaraches.
Be sure to check the instruction pages for tying methods and tips.

Measure your foot:
- Stand with your heels against a flat vertical wall. Your heels should be just touching the wall, not pressing into it.
- Slide a ruler under each foot and take the measurement in centimeters from the wall to the tip of your longest toe.
- Take the longer of the two foot measurements.
The chart below lists the actual length and width of our sandal sizes. For wiggle room, take the measurement of your foot and add 1/2 cm or more. Find the size below that best fits the length.
For example, our Head Craft Monkey's feet measure exactly 29 cm. He added 1/2 cm and chose a size 11.5 which is 29.51 cm long. The size 11.5 fits him perfectly!
You can also measure the widest part of your forefoot to make sure it is not considerably wider or narrower than the sandal.
For example, our Head Craft Monkey's feet measure about 11.5 cm wide at the forefoot. The size 11.5, at 11.85 cm wide is the perfect width for him.

Question:
I am very interested in trying these shoes as my next pair for running. I live in a moist/humid west coast climate and wonder how the leather and glue holds up in these conditions? I would prefer lether to bare rubber but want it to work in this environment. I usualy don't run in the rain but damp is normal alot fall winter and spring.
Thanks, Darryl, BC Canada
Answer:
The leather is not ideal for the wet season up here in the pacific northwest. We are in Seattle and I prefer the Naked Top (no leather) during the wet months. Though the leather is nice when it's dry. It also depends on how much your running. If your running everyday and the leather is getting wet and drying every day it will probably start to peel up in spots with time.

Question:
Do the elasticized leather laces really hold the sandal as securely to your foot as the other laces?
Answer:
Yes, except for in extreme conditions. They are not ideal for super steep technical trails and they don't do well in the mud. The Leadville leather laces are better for those conditions. But for paved surfaces, wet or dry, and average trails they do great.
Question:
are the soles really "vibram"?
Answer:
Yes. All of the soles are Vibram except the Recyclado.
Question:
I'm interested in trying a pair for running (~30 miles a week) but noticed the laces go through the bottom of the sandal. How often do they wear out an need to be replaced?
Answer:
The knot on the bottom of the sandal will eventually wear out, usually after a hundred miles or so, depending on terrain, stride, running speed, and technique. When it does break, all you have to do is pull more lace (spare tire) through the toe hole, tie it in a knot, then re-tie your sandal. You can check out Tying Your Equus Laces , for more info on tying knots.
Question:
How well does the suede foot bed mold to the foot compared to the shell cordovan?
Answer:
The suede on the Original Luna molds to your foot really well which is mostly because the Neoprene type rubber takes an impression of your foot really well. Even the Original Luna naked top molds well. The shell cordovan molds a little better than the Original but the biggest difference is just the feel on your foot.
Question:
Does the knot under the sole feel strange/cause any problems when running?
Answer:
We flatten the knot as much as possible before we send them out and they will flatten down more with use.
With the Equus elasticized laces the knot is not very noticeable, especially once the sandal molds to your foot and breaks in.
The traditional laces have a bigger knot that is a little more noticeable, especially for smaller feet but it will flatten out and very few people have problems with feeling the knot under their sandals. It tends to mash and mold into the sandal and become unnoticeable.
Also, you should know that the knot will eventually break with wear and when it does you will need to pull more lace through the hole and tie a new knot.
I hope that helps!
Question:
About how many mile of road running will the soles endure?
Answer:
That will depend on road surfaces and form but we recently got a report from a customer who put in around 2500 miles on his Original Lunas before he wore them out.
Question:
I see in one of the FAQ answers that the elasticized laces "are not ideal for super steep technical trails." How do they hold up on steep paved trails?
Answer:
They do well on steep pavement. I am mostly thinking of steep mountain scree slopes or those sections of trails that are so steep that you start to need to use your hands, that they don't do that well on. In those conditions you need some lace that hold your foot just a little more securely, like the leadville lace. Also, with the elasticized laces the wider ones are going to feel more secure than the thinner ones.
Question:
Are the sizes in the chart the length and width of the sandal itself or are they meant to be an estimate of your foot size that will fit a sandal cut slightly larger than the given dimensions?
Answer:
The measurements on the chart are the actual measurements of the huaraches. We do offer custom sizing if you don't fit into these sizes, or if you have wide or narrow feet. Custom doesn't cost any extra.
Question:
I have the Original Lunas with Suede Footbed. My feet sweat a ton which causes them to slip and slide in the sandals. I was wondering if I could solve this problem if I stripped off the suede footbed down to the naked sole.
Answer:
Excessive moisture with either the Naked Top or the Suede Footbed can cause some slipping. Some people do prefer the Naked Top if wearing them in wet conditions or if sweating heavily.
However, before you peel away the suede, consider that some wearers have had great success by using a heavy grit sandpaper or wire brush to add more nap to the suede. And if possible, start out with clean feet and sandals.
Play around and please let us know how they're working for you so we can be sure you have a sandal you love wearing!
Question:
Is there a big difference in how comfortable the Naked Tops are compared to the Suede Footbed?
Answer:
It's mostly a personal preference. Although we find most people prefer the feel of the Suede Footbed, many also find they like the Naked Tops, thus we offer both.
Question:
Five Fingers are 3.5mm thick and the Original Luna is 6mm thick. Do you still get a barefoot feel with the Original Luna?
Answer:
We feel the Original Luna is about as close to barefoot as you can get with minimalist footwear. The soling material will mold to the foot with use in the the sense that where the foot compresses the soling material, it will become slightly thinner and the entire sole will begin to take the overall shape of the foot. Furthermore one major benefit of a sandal is that the foot is allowed to spread as naturally as it wants to. No more, no less.
Question:
What should I consider when choosing an Equus Elasticized Lace width?
Answer:
Great question, one we are answering all the time! We like the wider 5/8" lace for the greatest feeling of security, however it is a lot of lace between the toes for some. For that reason our 1/2" is the most popular. The 3/8" is good for smaller feet, if the toe gap is small or if people just like a little less between the toes.
Question:
I'm very interested in getting a pair for summer, walking and possibly running. I wear size 7 women's. Do you think that I will need custom, or would size 8 work? Is there any kind of lace that is preferable for running? Thank you!
Answer:
Send us a note when you order asking us to determine your size for you, or to make a custom pair if that would be the best possible fit. Select custom as the size when you order and send in your footprint.
Laces are such a personal preferential item. People are really loving the Elasticized Lace for ease of taking on and off and for comfort as well are enjoying them for running. However for more technical terrain or steeper slopes, many people prefer the traditional style of lacing as it's a more secure fit. Again, it's such a personal thing. If at all possible it's likely best to try as many combinations as possible.
